India have officially reclaimed the No.1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings after securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the T20I series against Zimbabwe in Harare.
The reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions moved back to the top of the rankings after England had briefly overtaken them following their dominant 4-0 home T20I series victory earlier this month. India’s convincing performances in Zimbabwe have now restored their position as the world’s highest-ranked T20I side.
India Continue Their Dominance
After registering a comprehensive victory in the opening T20I—powered by a sensational bowling display and a record-breaking innings from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi—India carried their momentum into the second match with another outstanding all-round performance.
Despite losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a crucial 66-run partnership, laying the perfect foundation for a massive total.
Kishan produced a brilliant 81 off 44 balls, while Tilak Varma stole the show with a breathtaking 60 from just 29 deliveries, helping India post an imposing target of 220 runs.
Kishan Explains India’s Batting Approach
Speaking after the match, Player of the Match contender Ishan Kishan highlighted the team’s calm approach following the early setbacks.
“We were down two wickets, but at the same time as a batter batting at No.3, your job is to just watch the ball and play your natural game.”
“You also have to understand the wicket. There were a lot of thoughts going in whether we wanted to reach 250, 230 or if the wicket was about getting 170-180. Shreyas Iyer came in and we just wanted to build a partnership and take the innings deep. I think we executed our plans really well.”
Zimbabwe Collapse Under Pressure
Chasing a daunting 220-run target, Zimbabwe’s batting line-up never recovered after a disastrous start.
The hosts lost five wickets within the first nine overs, with India’s bowlers maintaining relentless pressure throughout the innings. Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 129, handing India a convincing victory and an unbeatable 2-0 series lead.
The comprehensive win also confirmed India’s return to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings, underlining the depth and consistency of the current squad.
Eyes on a Series Whitewash
With the series already secured, India will now aim for a clean sweep when they face Zimbabwe in the third and final T20I on Sunday, July 26.
Having regained the No.1 ranking and continued their impressive run since lifting the T20 World Cup trophy, the Men in Blue will look to finish the tour on a high and further strengthen their status as the world’s premier T20I team.
