Indian cricket’s fitness system is once again under the spotlight. Following disappointing performances in England and Ireland, the BCCI has begun tightening its fitness protocols, with new benchmark standards and greater scrutiny over player conditioning.

According to reports, the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) is introducing a standardized fitness benchmark using the Bronco Test, replacing the Yo-Yo Test as the primary assessment. Players will now be expected to complete the Bronco Test in 5.15–5.20 minutes to be considered fit for selection.

New Fitness Benchmark Introduced

The change comes after concerns that the CoE and the Indian team’s medical staff were not working in complete coordination while assessing player fitness. Reports also suggest that some senior players were previously given more relaxed fitness targets, leading to inconsistencies in the evaluation process.

Harshit Rana’s Weight Raises Questions

One of the biggest talking points is Harshit Rana, who reportedly weighed 97 kg when he was cleared for India’s tour of England despite concerns over his fitness.

Harshit Rana’s Fitness Sparks Big Questions in BCCI

After suffering cramps during the third T20I against England, the team management reportedly found him to be around 4 kg overweight. The CoE has since instructed him to keep his weight below 96 kg, and he has now reduced it to 94 kg. He is expected to receive fitness clearance soon.

Communication Gap Exposed

The report also highlights communication issues within the BCCI’s fitness setup. Several regular India players were reportedly not properly informed about the new Bronco Test requirements. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was said to have been surprised by the sudden fitness assessment conducted before the Sri Lanka tour.

Focus on Preventing Injuries

With injuries to key players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit Rana affecting India’s recent campaigns, the BCCI is aiming to create a more consistent and transparent fitness system. The new standards are expected to ensure that every player meets the same physical requirements before being considered for national selection.

The coming months will reveal how these stricter fitness rules impact player preparation and India’s overall performance on the international stage.
