India’s T20I leadership is set for a major change as the selectors prepare for a new era ahead of the 2028 cycle, with the upcoming squad announcement for the Ireland and England tour expected to confirm a significant reshuffle.
According to reports, Shreyas Iyer is set to take over the T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, who is likely to be dropped from the squad following a dip in form across recent international and IPL seasons.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Decline After World Cup Glory
Suryakumar had led India to the T20 World Cup title in March, but struggled to maintain consistency afterward. In the 2026 T20 World Cup, he managed 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72. His struggles continued in IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76.
Selectors are now reportedly ready to move on from the 35-year-old, marking a sharp transition in India’s T20 setup.
Shreyas Iyer’s Rise as Captaincy Candidate
Shreyas Iyer’s appointment reflects his strong leadership record in the IPL and consistent batting performances. He previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and also guided Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to finals in earlier seasons.
In IPL 2025 and 2026, Iyer delivered standout batting returns, scoring over 600 runs in one season and nearly 500 in the next at explosive strike rates above 165.
Young Talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set for Call-Up
The biggest surprise in the squad reshuffle is the inclusion of 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is expected to receive his maiden India call-up.
Sooryavanshi impressed during IPL 2026 with 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30, making him one of the most exciting young prospects in world cricket. He is also set to represent India A in an upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka involving Afghanistan.
Probable India Playing XI (1st T20I vs Ireland)
The following XI is expected to be India’s strongest combination for the opening T20I, offering a blend of aggressive batting, all-round depth and wicket-taking bowling options.
Probable XI: Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube / Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj
Road Ahead for India T20I Team
India’s upcoming T20I tour begins with two matches against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match series in England from July 1 to July 11. The tour is seen as the start of India’s long-term planning for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.
The official squad announcement is expected on Saturday, which will confirm whether this leadership transition becomes reality and signal the beginning of a new chapter in Indian T20 cricket.
