The opening day of the Lanka Premier League 2026 has been overshadowed by a significant off-field development after a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings franchise was arrested by Sri Lankan authorities over allegations of attempting to bribe a player.
According to officials, the alleged approach was reported by the player around 10 days ago, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest on July 17, just hours before the tournament opener.
In response, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that it is fully cooperating with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports and emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward corruption.
SLC also stated that the Lanka Premier League 2026 will continue as scheduled, with additional integrity measures already in place. Independent Integrity Mentors have been appointed throughout the tournament to provide anti-corruption education and strengthen oversight, ensuring the competition is conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
Despite the investigation, the opening fixture between Jaffna Kings and Galle Marvels is set to go ahead as planned, with cricket fans hoping the focus soon returns to the action on the field.
